When Burnout Starts to Sound Like a Relationship Problem

FORTION JOURNAL · STRESS AND RECOVERY

You have little patience, no energy and less interest in things you usually enjoy. At home, that can come across as distance or irritation. You may care deeply about your partner while struggling to show up the way you want.

Describe what is happening without blaming

“I'm overwhelmed and struggling to switch off” opens a different conversation from “You ask too much of me.” Listen to how your behaviour is affecting them as well. Stress may help explain a reaction without excusing hurtful treatment.

Look for support beyond the couple

Workload changes, professional help or a conversation with a doctor may be needed, especially when symptoms persist. Agree on manageable responsibilities and contact at home. Your partner can support you, but should not have to become the only place your stress goes.
