Caring for Ageing Parents and Still Making Room for Each Other

FORTION JOURNAL · STRESS AND RECOVERY

The phone rings during dinner, another appointment needs arranging and your partner gets the version of you that is completely drained. Caring for a parent can bring love, worry and practical work all at once. It can also change the time you have as a couple.

Explain the load, not just the schedule

Talk about the emotional part as well as the errands. Ask what support your partner can realistically offer, without assuming they can take over. Consider other family help or care resources where available.

Protect a small point of connection

A short walk or check-in may be more realistic than a full night out. Let the plan flex when care needs change, but acknowledge the disappointment rather than ignoring it. If exhaustion becomes persistent, seek support for yourself as well as the person you care for.
