Supporting a Partner Who Wants to Drink Less
Your partner says they want a different routine, and you want to be helpful. You may be unsure whether to remind them, remove alcohol or avoid the topic. The most useful first step is asking what support they actually want.
Make shared plans easier
Offer activities that do not revolve around drinking and keep alternatives they enjoy available. Ask before telling other people about the change. Encouragement should not become public praise that makes them feel watched.
Respect the limits of your role
You are a partner, not their monitor or treatment team. If they may be dependent or experience withdrawal, encourage medical help before sudden changes. Keep space to discuss your own needs and boundaries as well as their goals.
