Shift Work and Relationships: Finding Time That Is Really Yours
One of you gets home as the other is heading out. Days off rarely line up, and a missed message can feel bigger when time is scarce. Shift work asks for a different rhythm, rather than a copy of everyone else's evening routine.
Find a realistic overlap
Look for a shared meal, a short call or a quiet hour that does not cut into needed sleep. Plan around energy as well as availability. Being technically free after a long shift does not mean feeling ready for intimacy.
Make the small plans dependable
Agree on how to update each other when work changes. Protect rest without reading it as rejection. If the schedule is putting a strain on the relationship, discuss what each person misses most before trying to fit more into an already crowded week.
