When You Do Not Want a Drink but Everyone Keeps Offering

FORTION JOURNAL · ALCOHOL AND CHOICES

You have said no, yet another glass appears. Social pressure can make a simple choice feel like a public explanation of your life. You are allowed to keep the answer brief, whether you are drinking less for health, sleep or personal preference.

Have a phrase ready

“No thanks, I'm happy with this” usually says enough. Order something you enjoy and move the conversation along. You do not need to invent a medical reason or promise to drink another time.

Back up your own choice

Ask a friend or partner to support you if the pressure is tiring. You can leave a situation that stops being comfortable. If you need help changing alcohol use because of dependence or withdrawal, seek professional advice rather than relying on willpower or social tactics alone.
